Bio: Paul Kersey's background is an interesting one. He is of African American descent and has several direct relatives who escaped slavery through the underground railroad. Kersey also happens to own dual American-Canadian citizenship due to family diaspora. Kersey was born in Chicago to a low class family who later left the urban metropolis for rural Illinois. Kersey's family lived off the land in a self-sustainable lifestyle where his father grew and hunted all their food. At a young age Kersey learned how to hunt and survive using minimal supplies. Kersey was a highly skilled marksman having a particular affinity for revolvers. Kersey for the most part was a pacifist and against participating in any wars. His family though insisted because it would help pay for his education and hopefully lead to living a better life. After basic training Kersey became a medic where he witnessed the very worst of war. Kersey never did fully recover from the trauma. Kersey also realized that the whole idea of serving one's country was false because of the involvement of defense contractors. Still Kersey continued to serve off the frontlines on bases in Okinawa and Hawaii when the trauma proved to be too much. This turned out to be a turning point because this is where he was introduced to martial arts. Kersey had boxed for years and was skeptical of Karate's effectiveness in hand-to-hand combat. However this style of Karate was a lot more vicious and thus applicable to self defense on the street. Not only that but it combined Ju-Jutsu -esque grappling and sweeping techniques that he didn't know existed in Karate.
