Biography: The greatest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighter to ever come out of the state of New Jersey is Freddy Martin who used his skills to become IMMAF middleweight champion. Martin is well known as a bit of a nerd and an anorak (and possibly mildly autistic) who is either spending countless hours on the computer studying technique (or playing video games) or in the gym rolling. Martin though has retired from MMA and made the rather odd decision to enter the world of PitFighting and going into other rule sets to prove the superiority of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Martin believes that MMA is not the proper outlet to showcase his style since the rounds are so short and not being allowed to wear the gi when competing. Martin though to become IMMAF champion incorporated a lot of strength training but now at 31 going on 32 has basically stopped doing that (with the exception of kettlebells because kettlebells are awesome) to focus entirely on developing his actual martial arts skills. Now with the support of Dos Santos Industries he now has the luxury to devote all of his time to these endeavors. The PitFighting world better watch out because few have probably seen the kind of world class BJJ Martin brings to the table (along with his training in quarterstaff fighting for self defense purposes).
Combat Attire: a gi
Fighter Attributes/Strategy
Freddy Martin has off the charts ground technique developed over years of single minded obsession in the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, having witnessed several evolutions over the years. Martin's BJJ was actually quite takedown centric initially but he has now added a really formidable guard game on top of that including in vogue techniques like the berimbolo. He is able to switch effortlessly between a classic position over submission approach (like Zak Maxwell) and catch wrestling esque "submission as a position approach" like Garry Tonon. Freddy Martin generally prefers to grapple in the gi and rarely utilizes Eddie Bravo 10th Planet techniques with the exception of moves like the electric chair position. Martin spends a significant time crosstraining his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu working out with NCAA wrestlers at Rutgers University and Russian Sambo stylists making his takedown game quite good. Although Martin is something of a grappling savant he has seemingly no striking abilities of note but does understand the angles involved from training in quarterstaff fighting. He hasn't been able though to translate this well to hand-to-hand striking as his striking seems laboured and awkward possibly a result of the Einstellung effect. Martin's biggest weakness however is that he is more of a martial scientist rather than a martial artist. His entire style is based around many possible solutions memorized like a chess grand master. Martin though is starting to remedy this problem by incorporating more state-of-the-art concept based training like Kit Dale instead of mindlessly drilling techniques. Martin will have to improve this in order to reach the top of PitFighting because of its unpredictable nature. Martin's submission game is quite vast attacking almost any limb including leg locks developed from his Sambo crosstraining.
